Major Labrador Diseases

No matter for what purpose you need a dog, try to get as much information as possible about its pedigree to find out if it has a tendency to hereditary diseases.

The most common in the Labrador Retriever is progressive retinal atrophy and dysplasia of the hip and elbow joints.

Retinal Atrophy

is a progressive retinal degeneration, painless, but with tragic consequences, as it leads to complete blindness. Its first sign is the deterioration of night vision.

Hip dysplasia

- This is a pathology, which in mild cases can lead to lameness of the hind limbs, and in more severe cases it causes severe pain and makes it impossible to walk. Knee dysplasia is osteoarthritis of the knee joint, which leads to a limp of the forepaws.

What other diseases of Labradors are more common?

There are several other diseases that dogs of this breed are prone to. These are lymphosarcoma or lymphoma, angiosarcoma, epilepsy in a dog, mast cell cancer, atopy.

Since most of these diseases are hereditary, the risk of their occurrence is reduced in cases where only healthy individuals are used for reproduction, as is customary in good dog breeders. With uncontrolled reproduction, the risk of their occurrence is very high.

Every owner should occasionally show his dog to an oculist and take him to an x-ray examination so that if one of these diseases is found, he should be excluded from participation in the reproduction process. Unlike other breeds of dogs up to 6 months, the Labrador Retriever puppy should not move a lot.

His bone system is formed only by 7-8 months, so physical activity is contraindicated for him. Let him rest as much as possible, but do not blow dust off him. He can play and communicate with his own kind, but only under the supervision of the owner. Let his adult companion dogs be his companions rather than young and nimble dogs.

Basically The Labrador Retriever is a fairly healthy breed of dog and, with proper care and maintenance of the disease, will bypass it.
