How to care and feed a puppy dog and her cubs?

An exciting moment - your favorite is about to give birth. This is the first birth and worried all members of the family. Let's go through this period step by step.

The first thing you have to do is prepare a place. When our dog was giving birth, we released a corner next to our bed so that we could control the situation at night. After all, puppies - it's like a newborn baby, require vigilant attention.

In addition, if the birth of the dog (and, especially, the first birth) begins at night, you should always be around, soothing and stroking your darling, as well as watching that the process took place without complications. Let us take the axiom that everything went well - the kids are already crawling around the mother’s belly, and the happy mother herself, blissfully closed her eyes, is resting.

What's next? Let the dog rest for a few hours and realize itself in the new role. Prepare a place during this time, preferably somewhere nearby - it may be a small box, covered with some kind of clean cloth. Here you will transfer the puppies while you change the “postpartum bed”.

Sure to! All the rags on which the dog gave birth - remove, completely cover her place with clean and fresh linen (old sheets or pillowcases, depending on the size of your dog). After you finish this procedure, leave the young mother in peace and quiet - she must rest and recuperate.

Feeding puppy dog

Nutrition nursing bitch is not very different from her usual diet. Of course, if your dog was originally accustomed to healthy food. I teach all of my dogs from the first days of our appearance in our house to cereals. Groats are the basis of dog food. Preferred - oatmeal, buckwheat, wheat, rice.

According to my observations, barley groats do not fit, it causes an upset stomach. Why dont know. But I try to exclude barley grits from the diet of my dogs. I have large breed dogs, so I buy bone beef sets (in no way pork, dogs are not recommended fatty meat) and cook porridge on the basis of beef (chicken) broth.

I recommend adding vegetables. The consistency is “thick soup or liquid sour cream”, that is, the food should not be too thin, but not very thick. A nursing bitch needs additional vitamins that can be purchased at any pet store. Special emphasis should be placed on calcium - it is important both for mothers in the postpartum period and for growing babies who will receive it with their mother's milk.

I, as experienced canine experts once recommended to me, add fish oil to my dogs ’diet, either in pure form in small quantities or by replacing meat broths with fish twice a week. It turns out porridge with boiled fish in fish broth.

Remember: the expression "Dog is a dog's life" has, in fact, a deep meaning. First of all it concerns a dog's diet. Do not accustom the dog to:

  • to pickles
  • sweets
  • smoked products
  • various other goodies from the table.

Excesses do not benefit the dog's health. Low-fat meat, fish, cereals and vegetables - this is enough to make your pet feel good and look great.

Care

Nursing mother’s walks are not canceled, but are only reduced in time: she herself will quickly run home, especially in the first days after birth. Do not forget to carefully wipe clean with a damp cloth and paw belly after walking. If possible, it is better to wash with warm water. If this whole process takes place during the cold season, then we will necessarily wrap the dog before going outside, protecting its mammary glands from mastitis.

So, everything is fine with us - puppies suck milk, mommy is full and calm. Everything goes according to plan. Soon the eyes of the cubs will begin to open, the battles for a more “milky nipple” will be accompanied by howling and rumbling, the picture is certainly charming. But time passes quickly, and after a few weeks, the most courageous and active kids begin to explore the territory.

I hope you cleaned all the carpets in advance, ensuring their safety. After all, the older the kids become, the more difficult their mothers are to clean up after them. You must constantly do a wet cleaning, not allowing any "small piles" in the path of the younger generation. And these heaps will begin to appear more and more often, as the moment of "bait" comes.

We feed puppies

How and when does this happen? By two weeks of age, kids have eyes and ears, they begin to show curiosity. And we begin to accustom them to independence. It is advisable to immediately lure out of a special bowl: pour milk, take a cub (I usually choose the less active, as the more active crawl on their own) and slowly poke him with a muzzle into the milk.

Very carefully, not filling the baby's nasal sinuses with milk. Milk should be at room temperature, never cold. It takes two or three days to train all puppies to react to the bowl reflexively and to approach it independently. This is a very funny sight - a crush, a rumbling, a squeak, paws in milk ... I personally love to watch this process. To begin with, we perform this procedure no more than twice a day.

Four days later add porridge. It can be oatmeal, buckwheat, rice, semolina, boiled in milk and whipped with a blender. Be sure to liquid. Three weeks have passed. The little one already independently runs up on sprawling paws to the bowl and absorbs milk porridges. And we proceed to the meat menu. As already mentioned - no pork, only beef or chicken.

The most protein meat is the seminal glands of the bull ("bull eggs"). They can be bought at the market. Beef kidneys are also great. Canine recommended to give raw meat. But I always carefully and always wipe it with boiling water - just in case. And then pass through the meat grinder. I add such stuffing to the finished non-milk porridge and, therefore, begin to introduce meat into the puppy diet.

It is with porridge and little by little - the stomach must get used to the new food. I do the same with fish - pour fillet with boiling water, mince, add to porridge. Simultaneously with the fish and meat, we begin to add vegetables, necessarily boiled. All puppy food should still be finely ground (no pieces) and thin. And here comes the first holiday - your dog's puppies are one month old.

They are already accustomed to the bowl and can eat independently. From one month of age, complementary foods should occur at least five times a day. The diet is like this:

  • milk porridge,
  • porridge with meat,
  • curd with milk,
  • milk porridge with the addition of egg yolk,
  • porridge with fish.

Vary yourself according to circumstances, but try to make the food varied. Do not forget to add boiled carrots and beets, in small doses. When I boil the broth, I add half a small onion, which is very useful for the work of the stomach. I’m catching and throwing out the onion after readiness, it takes part only during the preparation of the broth.

At one and a half months a puppy can be separated from the mother. Do not forget to get rid of worms and vaccinate, but these actions should take place only with the direct participation of the veterinarian. And the most important thing. When giving puppies, make sure that they fall into good and reliable hands.

For example, I have been “leading” all my puppies for six months: I call up the owners, listen to all their enthusiasm with pleasure, answer all questions, sometimes even come to see the former pet. This is called responsibility "for those we tame." Joyful discoveries to you in the "dog world".
