The history of the origin of the Scotch Terrier breed

Scotch terrier belong to the most ancient species of terriers. It comes from the first coarse-haired dogs - Scottish Terriers. His homeland is, apparently, Berkshire - an area in central Scotland.

It was there, in 1881, that the main population of dogs of this breed was formed.

The Scotch Terrier is not the oldest breed, but it is one of the oldest breeds that the English Cannel Club has registered. Terrier in Latin means "land". His duties included work under the ground, hunting for badgers, for rodents, and other small animals. A lot of terriers take their origins from the British Isles, many have the same ancestors. In Scotland, for many centuries, short-legged, fearless, energetic dogs were bred that could easily climb into the hole, locate and drive out the beast.

In the middle of the 19th century, terriers spread in two varieties: short-legged, black-haired terriers from Scotland and long-legged soft-haired terriers in England. A large family of Scottish terriers includes: scotch terrier, west highland white terrier, kern terrier, sky terrier.

At the beginning of the 19th century, they were all called Scottish terriers, knitting among themselves. Often in one litter could be 2 or even 3 breeds. The decisive factor determining the puppy's belonging to the breed was color. These dogs were first shown at the exhibition in 1872.

Already in 1879, the Kennel Club proposed to divide the Scottish Terriers into classes according to the color and type of wool. 1879 is considered the official year of the beginning of the Scottish Terrier breed. For the first time a scotch terrier was shown as an independent breed at an exhibition in London. 13 dogs were shown. Here are the first names of the winners: male Tartan and bitch Splinter-P.

In 1883 the Scottish Terrier Club was organized, and its enthusiasts wrote the first breed standard - the standard scotch terrier. The main color of scotch was brindl (tiger), blacks were rarely met, and in 1905 the first wheat champion Moning Nip was born.

In Russia, the Scottish terriers appeared and became known thanks to the remarkable clown, the clown of the century, Pencil (Mikhail Rumyantsev), who went to the circus arena accompanied by Scotch Klyaksa. When the scum ran out, you could do nothing, everyone was already laughing.
