Keep in a city apartment and train you can dog almost any breed. It all depends on what kind of maximum inconvenience you are willing to put up with - both domestic and psychological. The peculiarities of keeping dogs in a city of different breeds depend not only (and not so much) on the amount of wool in an apartment on a particular breed, but primarily on the characteristics of the psyche of the breed and the nature of the particular dog.
A professional can train many animals, including predators. But there are few people who would agree to live under the same roof with a bear or a tiger, even if it is perfectly trained. But for some reason people get along perfectly well with a Rottweiler or German Shepherd, although these are also serious predators (as, by the way, all dogs).
Why? Dog training is only the formation of different motor responses by a person to certain conditioned stimuli. But for a dog that lives in an apartment together with the owner and his family members, training is a secondary matter.
Keeping dogs in the city. The most important qualities for a dog
In order for a person to live quite peacefully next to a dog, the dog requires not so much a high degree of training as:
- the willingness to obey the master-master is obedience;
- the need to stay close to your “pack” - devotion;
- the ability to quickly change acquired habits - the ability to retrain;
- ability to withstand significant psychological stress, being close to a person - stress resistance.
A man during the breeding of one or another breed of dogs, purposefully selected for further breeding of such dogs, which besides service qualities, must have qualities that allow a dog to normally exist next to a person.
For example, in dogs of one of the most vicious breeds - Dobermans, more often than in dogs of other breeds, there are animals so loyal to their owner that it is simply impossible to pass them on to temporary maintenance for strangers.
We will evaluate our strength
Most people when choosing a dog for content in the city come to the conclusion that the best solution would be a reasonable compromise. On the one hand - obedient, ready to carry out any order of the owner, the dog is of little use, for example, for self-protection of the apartment. On the other hand, an independent dog, “with character”, can become a source of danger for the owner himself.
But before bringing a good guard dog into the house, the future owner should comprehensively assess his strength, think whether he can become a “leader” for such a dog, whether the dog would pose a threat to himself and his family members.
Necessary conditions for the safe coexistence of man and dog are mutual predictability and controllability. If the dog is controlled, and its behavior in various situations is predictable, then this dog is convenient for maintenance and safe for others and for the owner. If the behavior of the person himself, from the point of view of the dog, is predictable for her, then the dog is not afraid of the person, and therefore will not show an innate defensive reaction towards him.
Choosing a breed, not an appearance
Of course, the choice of dog breed is a matter of taste. But before you buy a dog of your chosen breed, you need to ask the experts for what purpose the breed was bred. This must be done in order to further the owner did not try to teach the Labrador guard duty (the breed has a completely different instinct in the blood), or not be surprised if the Rottweiler tries to bite the owner when he tries to drive him out of the sofa, or I did not waste my time teaching the Doberman to rush to the front door at the slightest rustle.
Age and safety
Another important question that arises before the future owner of the dog is the age of the acquired animal. Someone thinks that it is more convenient to acquire an adult dog at the age of about a year, as in this case the owner will be spared from problems associated with vaccinations, diseases, puppy schooling for cleanliness and other inconveniences.
In addition, at this age, a young dog can already be trained to perform elementary commands, and, moreover, the character and exterior of the dog are already completely formed. At first glance, the advantages of such a solution are obvious, however ...
The dog in his mind and perception seals the members of his pack at the age of about five months. All people and dogs with whom the young dog will meet later, she considers strangers for quite a long time. That is why the process of habituation of an adult dog to a new owner is delayed sometimes for long months and even years.
To subjugate a puppy is usually not a problem
A completely different thing is an adult dog. There are animals with a complex character, bad habits (often unrecoverable), a difficult fate, the details of which are unknown to the new owner. All these factors can be a source of additional danger for the new owner. Naturally, there are exceptions to any rule, but when it comes to large breeds of dogs, it is better not to risk and acquire a puppy.
Preparing a puppy for keeping in an urban setting
When communicating with a puppy you need a gentle, but reasonably demanding treatment, restraining unreasonable agility.
Schooling to equipment. Collar, leash and muzzle should be a signal for the puppy to go for a walk. In case of refusal to wear a collar (leash, muzzle), a puppy should be distracted by a treat, a game, a toy and try again. Continue to train in this way until the collar is free to dress.
Schooling to calm behavior before leaving
Puppies with increased excitability must be given some time to show their delight, of course, within reasonable limits, then by a strict team make him take a fixed position, standing or sitting. At the same time, the owner must hold the equipment in his hands so that the puppy can see him.
After the dressing procedure, the puppy and the owner go to the front door together. When trying to puppy again to indulge, jump or otherwise interfere with the quiet movement, it is necessary to reassure his strict prohibiting team or stop and calmly wait out the attack of indefatigable fun.
Before you open the door ...
In order for the puppy not to interfere with the owner to mess with locks and latches, it is best to put him with the command "Sit" or "Stand" near the door. It is necessary to open the door as quickly as possible so that the puppy does not stay up for a long time, since it will not sustain a long stationary state.
Opening the door ...
The owner misses the dog from the apartment on the command "Forward", but, holding it by the leash, gives the command "Sit" or "Stand." Further, he performs actions to close the doors, while watching the puppy, preventing the corresponding commands from all his wrong actions, or waiting for complete peace of mind.
In a house without a lift ...
If there is no elevator in the house, after the above actions, the owner takes the puppy in his arms and descends the stairs at a quiet pace. If the puppy can already go down the stairs on his own, then he does it next to the owner also at a quiet pace. If the puppy begins to hurry, the owner restrains the puppy with a light tension of the leash and commands "Quiet", "Near".
Before the door of the entrance is a mandatory stop at the command "Stand." It is undesirable to force a puppy to sit in front of the entrance door, especially a bitch, since the floor in front of the general entrance to the house is probably not as clean as it is in front of the apartment and can be a source of infection.
In a house with an elevator ...
In order not to frighten the puppy, the owner at first takes him in his arms and enters the elevator. While waiting for the elevator, the puppy may be on the floor, but preferably in a standing position (for hygienic reasons).
After exiting the elevator, the puppy falls to the floor and, together with the owner, moves to the front door. The actions of the owner are the same as in the above paragraph.
