When organizing an exhibition of dachshunds according to the rules established by the hunting departments of the CIS countries (the Regulations on Shows and Broods of Hunting Dogs of 1981 are in force in Russia and Ukraine), it must be kept in mind that not only exterior, but also working qualities of the dachshund are important here. Dogs are allowed to breed only by the results of a comprehensive assessment - appraisal.

On broods, only the exterior of the dog is assessed, compliance with the standard, breed and origin. Broods are usually held twice a year. Young dogs take part in them. They receive only exterior ratings, but titles are not awarded and bonuses are not made. For the exterior, a young dog can get three marks: "very good", "good" and "satisfactory". For a rating of "very good", a Large silver token is issued, for a rating of "Good", a Small silver token.

Specialized hunting shows are the most popular among working dog owners, and the awards and marks received at them are the most prestigious. As a rule, when determining the classiness of hunting dogs, estimates obtained at any exhibitions, except for specialized ones, are not taken into account.

At exhibitions, hunting dogs are divided into groups by age and sex. There are three age groups. In the youngest, dogs are put in between 10 and 16 months of age, in the middle one - from 1.5 to 3 years old, in the oldest one - from 3 to 10 years.

Examination at the exhibition begins with an assessment of the exterior. In the younger age group, the rating "excellent" for the exterior is not awarded. Dogs are rated both statically and in motion. The dental system is checked, dogs are examined for cryptorchidism, the expert assesses the backbone, the muscles, the condition of the dog. Then the dogs are watched in motion. Here all the advantages and disadvantages of the structure, anatomical defects, the level of physical fitness. After the final comparative inspection and placement of dogs, the expert makes a description of each dog and gives marks.

The mark "excellent" is given to the dog, which has a well-defined breed type, type of sexual constitution, no anatomical defects, the type of coat and color correspond to the standard of this breed species. The dog is in excellent physical shape, the type of psyche corresponds to the breed, it behaves calmly, well-balanced, does not pay attention to other dogs, allows the expert to inspect and measure themselves if necessary.

The mark “very well” is given to a dog that differs from a “pupil” only by the presence of small defects that do not turn into defects and are not genetic.

The mark “good” is given to a dog, which has a number of defects in the structure or there are no more than two defects. Dogs with a rating of "good" are practically not used in breeding.

The rating "satisfactory" is given to dogs with defects that preclude their use in breeding.

Metis, dogs of unknown or documented origin, not in exhibition condition, patients are left without an assessment and are removed from the ring. The expert also has the right to remove from the exhibition a dog who does not know how to behave, is aggressive, does not allow to conduct an inspection, or a dog whose owner violates the rules of behavior and exposure, is at odds with the judge, interferes with the examination, interferes with the exhibition.

It should be emphasized that the assessment for the exterior at hunting exhibitions is not sufficient for awarding a medal. Medal dogs get for their class. The classiness is determined by the results of the appraisal - a comprehensive scoring of the dog's exterior, working qualities, and the level of offspring.
