How to teach puppy commands?

Training a puppy at home should begin as soon as a puppy appears in your home.

At the age of 2 to 4 months, in addition to the commands “To me” and “Location”, the puppy should be taught to collar or harness, to the leash and to such commands as “Sit”, “Lie down” and to stop unwanted actions on the “Fu ".

Before you teach a puppy to a collar or harness, you need to make sure that these items are the appropriate size, do not dangle and do not restrict the movement of your pet. At the first stages, put the collar on the puppy carefully, without hurting him, giving him the opportunity to wear him for a while. If the puppy is anxious and tries to rip off the collar, then calm it down, stroke it and give it a treat, or try to distract it with a game. Gradually increase the wearing time of the collar. During the day, carry out such actions 3-4 times.

After the puppy gets used to the collar or harness, start gradually to accustom him to the leash. Often, after fastening the leash to the collar, many puppies begin to kick, resist, or lie down on the ground. To avoid this, it is necessary to lower the fastened leash to the ground and allow the pet to walk in a free state.

After a few minutes, take the leash in your hand and pull it slightly, without interfering with the movement of the puppy. During the entire walk repeat this several times. In no case do not make strong jerks leash, so as not to frighten the puppy and do not cause him fear.

To teach a puppy to the Sit team, call him to yourself, show him a treat and, having said the required command, raise a hand with a treat around his head, prompting the pet to sit down. If the puppy does not sit down, you can influence it by lightly pressing on the croup. As soon as your pet sits, praise him immediately, giving a treat.

Repeat the exercise several times, taking short breaks. After a while, teach your puppy to sit on a team in other places with different irritants. Gradually train your pet to perform the Sit command on your left foot, while giving him a treat with his right hand.

After your puppy will clearly carry out the "Sit" command, start working on the "Lie" command. To do this, put your pet on your left foot, say “Lie down” and stretch your right hand with a delicacy forward and down.

If the puppy does not go to bed, then lightly press him on the withers with his left hand and hold it down for several seconds. As soon as the puppy goes down, encourage him with a treat and an exclamation of "Good" or "Bravo." Repeat the exercise several times, taking short breaks.

After a few days, start practicing the “Lie down” command with various stimuli (on the street, in parks, and in places where a small number of people and animals gather).
An important skill necessary to control your puppy is stopping unwanted actions on the "Fu" command. This command is always pronounced only threatening intonation.

The development of this skill should begin at an early age puppy. At an early stage, when teaching to the “Fu” team, use a more strict intonation, a light slap with the palm of your hand or a blow with a thin twig on the back of the puppy, a sharp jerk with a leash. Thus, the puppy develops a reflex, that after each pronunciation of the “Fu” command, an unpleasant mechanical effect follows.

The main thing is not to overdo the mechanical impact, so as not to disrupt your contact with your pet. It is necessary to work out the termination of undesirable actions each time the puppy does something wrong, for example, it bites sneakers, tears things up, picks up something from the ground or the floor, etc. Ensure that your puppy on the command "Fu" smoothly and accurately, regardless of the environment, to stop any unwanted actions for you.

And do not forget that after each correctly executed team, the puppy should be encouraged with a treat, stroking or exclaiming “Good.”
