How and what to treat mastitis in a dog?

Mastitis is a possible complication in a dog after childbirth. This is an acute or chronic inflammation of the breast, which can occur for several reasons.

Causes of mastitis in dogs

  • Firstly - This is a trauma of the breast, which is often caused by puppies during sucking, for example, claws. A bacterial infection can penetrate this wound and this will lead to inflammation.
  • Also the cause of stagnant mastitis can be milk stagnation. It occurs when the puppies are incorrectly or weaned too early from the mother, and also if all or most of the puppies die suddenly, and there is no one to feed.
  • Mastitis in a dog can be caused not by feeding puppies, but, on the contrary, by false pregnancy, as well as diseases of the birth canal and the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Additional factors that cause mastitis are: genetic predisposition, stress, exposure to chemicals, any infections with reduced immunity, heat and freezing, blocked ducts of the nipple sphincters.

Symptoms of the disease

With mastitis, the dog becomes lethargic, has no appetite, or decreases in appetite, and sometimes body temperature rises. In this case, the skin around the mammary glands is necessarily redder, while they themselves increase, become dense and painful. If pressure is applied to the nipples, watery milk is mixed with a mixture of pus with blood or gray-white, greenish-brown flakes.

However, since mastitis is easily confused with other pathologies of the mammary gland, the final diagnosis should only be made by a veterinarian. The doctor should be treated as quickly as possible so that the inflammation does not develop into an abscess, cellulitis, and then gangrene.

Dog mastitis treatment

In the early stages of a timely visit to the doctor, mastitis can be cured therapeutically. Outwardly prescribed ointment anesthetics and lotions, and internally - anti-inflammatory, antipyretic agents, antibiotics.

If the dog feeds the puppies, they must be transferred to artificial feeding, and the mother should be given complete rest.

If a conservative treatment does not help for several days, and purulent abscesses begin to develop on the breast, urgent surgical intervention is necessary.
