How to treat anemia in dogs?

Anemia (or anemia) is a violation of the blood component composition, in which hemoglobin decreases and the absolute number of red blood cells decreases.

Hemoglobin is needed to supply the cells and tissues of the body with oxygen, with its deficiency developing cellular oxygen starvation. There are several types of anemia.

  1. Posthemorrhagic. Occur as a result of acute or chronic severe bleeding, for example, gastritis or peptic ulcer disease. May cause shock.
  2. Hemolytic. Occur as a result of poisoning with toxins: drugs or chemical compounds, infections. Often accompany diseases such as piroplasmosis, hepatitis, hepatosis.
  3. Hypoplastic. Congenital or acquired hematopoiesis insufficiency. Occurs due to the lack of certain vitamins and minerals: iron, copper, cobalt, folic acid, vitamin B12.
  4. Primary, arising in violation of erythropoiesis as a result of treatment with cytostatics.
  5. Secondary. Combined with the defeat of other organs, a complication of injuries and large blood loss.

Symptoms of anemia in dogs

Anemia can manifest itself in different ways, depending on the main pathogenetic factor that caused it.

  • Most often, the first sign of it is the pallor of the oral mucosa. It becomes as if "porcelain": from a slightly pink color all the way to pearl white.
  • The animal weakens in the eyes, becomes drowsy, breathes heavily, its pulse quickens. In hemolytic anemia, jaundice is primarily manifested.
  • An accurate diagnosis is made based on the results of laboratory testing of blood and bone marrow.
