How to treat abscess in dogs?

Dog abscess is a large abscess that occurs on any part of the dog's body. An abscess is of two kinds. Deep abscess occurs under the mucous membranes, and even in the internal organs. Superficial - is formed in loose connective subcutaneous tissue.

According to veterinary statistics, every second dog has an abscess at least once in a lifetime. After all, his pet "earn" is not so difficult - just prick or hit hard. That is, an abscess occurs as a result of even minor injuries.

Even a relatively small abscess develops rapidly and swells. At this time, inside the abscess itself, a surprisingly fast tissue decomposition reaction takes place, followed by the formation of microorganisms. They are instantly absorbed into the bloodstream and the abscess expands. As a result, an abscess lump can swell up greatly in literally 3-4 days.

Types of abscess in dogs

  • Benign look like reddened limited swelling. They contain thick pus in which a few virulent staphylococcus and a large number of living leukocytes. Sometimes they occur in a dog after a shot or vaccination.
  • Malignant differ in less pronounced tubercle formation. They are less elastic, as if "watery" inside, often more painful. Contain liquid pus, anaerobes and purulent-putrefactive bacteria.
  • Hot abscess red, swollen, painful, with marked elevated temperature in place. It quickly forms and sharply proceeds, is inclined to any opening.
  • "Cold", on the contrary, it develops slowly, all the signs are weak. It rarely resolves and therefore surgery is desirable. Most often, this type is observed in old sick dogs, with reduced body reactivity.

To determine the type of abscess is better to conduct a diagnostic puncture.

Signs of an abscess are quite noticeable. A small painful lump forms on the surface of the skin, which swells literally on the eyes, and after two or three days it becomes loose, and there is a feeling that it will burst. At this time, a large amount of pus is formed inside the abscess. He eats away tissue, and the abscess does spontaneously burst in a few days.

But it is not possible to recognize a deep abscess without a veterinarian. One can only notice by the general condition that the dog is sick. She is depressed, she is clearly tormented by pain in a particular place. If the vet suspects an abscess, he will direct the animal on an x-ray.

Treatment of abscess in dogs

  • With benign abscess apply dressings with Vishnevsky's ointment, ichthyol, agave leaf. When spontaneous opening, the cavity is treated with antiseptic solutions, 3% hydrogen peroxide. With a narrow and deep channel lay antiseptic ointment. Flush the wound should be deeply inserting a syringe into the abscess. Easy, external washing of positive results will not give - the wound will only heal outside, and inside the infection will remain
  • With a malignant abscess Do not provoke an autopsy due to the danger of spreading the infection. Surgical intervention is urgently needed, and after that - general and local therapy as directed and supervised by a physician.
  • Any abscess that has not been exposed, must be opened and cleaned. But only a doctor should do this.
  • It is advisable to puncture the dog with antibiotics to clear the body of infection.
