How to treat paralysis of the limbs in dogs?

Paralysis in dogs is the complete absence of the possibility of voluntary movements of certain parts of the body. Most often dogs suffer from limb paralysis.

Types of paralysis in dogs and their causes

Paralysis of the limbs occurs due to affection of the motor nerves. And for this, in turn, there may be several reasons. In veterinary medicine there are several types of paralysis of the limbs.

  1. With monoplegia, one paw is affected. Its causes are infectious diseases, encephalitis, myelitis, meningitis, sciatica, spinal stroke, tumors in dogs, bone fractures, and various intoxications.
  2. During paraparesis, two paws are paralyzed: either the hind or the front ones, but more often the hind legs. Its common cause is sciatica.
  3. Tetraplegia - paralysis of all four limbs causes trauma to the cervical spine, nerve damage due to intoxication or injury, plague of carnivores.
  4. The lesion of the two left or right extremities (hemiplegia) occurs when a brain abscess, plague of carnivores, tumors, injuries, cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, meningoencephalitis.
  5. Paralysis of the mandible (or trigeminal nerve) occurs as a result of injuries, brain diseases (dog plague, hemorrhage, rabies, abscesses and neoplasms in the brain), diseases of the teeth, middle ear inflammation.

Other peripheral paralyzes in certain areas of the body are most often associated with injuries.

Treatment of paralysis in dogs

Paralysis is not a sentence in most cases. Much depends on the nature of the paralysis itself, its causes, the age of the dog, and the timeliness of seeking treatment.

  • First of all, it is necessary to establish the cause of paralysis, for which the veterinarian conducts a number of outpatient studies. Treatment of the underlying disease depends on the treatment of paralysis.
  • The most traditional treatment is the use of antispasmodics: baralgin or no-spa, and if the dog is sick, then analgesics. Also use glucocorticoids (dexamethasone or prednisone), vitamins of group B.
  • If infectious-allergic reactions are the cause of limb paralysis, antihistamines may be prescribed.
  • Treatment of central paralysis with traditional methods does not always give the desired results. Especially the effectiveness is reduced due to the delayed start of treatment, inept use of drugs, because many muscles are affected.
  • In the treatment of central and peripheral paralysis, novocainic nerve blocks can also be used. Requires massage and warming of the affected muscles.
  • Complicating treatment is the fact that during paralysis of the dog, mobility is limited and hypostatic pneumonia quickly occurs, especially with tetraplegia.
  • In case of paraplegia of the hind limbs, supraural novocainic blockade according to V.V. Mosin is applied.

Efficiency is greatly enhanced with the combined use of physiotherapy, drug and pathogenetic methods.

There are breeds that can be attributed to the risk of paralysis of the paws. First of all, these are breeds of dogs with a long body: basset hounds, dachshunds, Russian greyhounds, scotch terriers, hounds, etc. These dogs have more hind legs with age than with many others.

  • Risk dogs need a balanced diet and regular medical check-ups. It should be attentive to walks, and on returning home carefully examine the animal for minor injuries and treat it all in time.
  • You also need to carefully examine the wool mites, whose poison is very toxic. A parasite that was not detected on time can cause paralysis of the limbs, as well as paralyzing the entire nervous system, including the respiratory system.
  • A terrible bacterium is botulism, which can enter the body through stale food and cause paralysis.

Since paralysis progresses very quickly, it is important that, at its smallest signs, visit a veterinary clinic as soon as possible or call a veterinarian at home.
