How to treat pyelonephritis in dogs?

Pyelonephritis in dogs is a bacterial kidney disease that occurs quite often. It can flow both acutely and chronically, sometimes primary and secondary.

Primary occurs without prior damage to the kidneys and urinary tract. Secondary is a consequence of functional or organic lesions of the kidneys or urinary tract.

Causes of pyelonephritis in dogs

Pyelonephritis can cause purulent processes in any tissues and organs of the body, colds, and even a banal weakening of the immune system. Mechanical irritation in urinary sand and stones, the presence of zooparasites in the dog’s body can cause inflammation.

Occasionally, damage to the renal pelvis can cause plant and mineral poisons. However, most often this disease becomes a consequence of prostatitis, cystitis, suppurative inflammation of the uterus.

Symptoms of the disease

Inflammation of the kidneys or pyelonephritis in dogs can be hemorrhagic, catarrhal and purulent.

  • It develops accompanied by fever,
  • with lower back pain and frequent urination,
  • the dog is depressed
  • she urinates often and painfully.

In the study of urine it reveals the appearance of protein and a variety of microbes. In the study of blood detect an increased ESR, neutrophilic leukocytosis, and sometimes hypochromic anemia. With the development of purulent pyelonephritis, renal failure may occur, turning into uremia.

Treatment of pyelonephritis in dogs

First of all, a sick animal needs complete rest in a well-ventilated, warm and clean room. Also, a sparing diet of carbohydrate-assimilable feeds is necessary. The basis of the dog's diet should be vegetables and low-fat milk products.

Food can be slightly salted, since in all forms of acute pyelonephritis there is no salt and water retention in the body. To reduce pain in the kidney area, painkillers are given to the animal: no-silo or platifillin. In the initial stages of the disease, it is very effective to administer the perirenal blockade.

In order to suppress the pathogenic microflora of the renal pelvis and kidneys are treated with antibiotics:

  • bitsillin,
  • penicillin,
  • Biseptol,
  • carbo-penicillin,
  • ampioks,
  • ampicillin,
  • Claforan,

and also sulfonamides (sulfadimetoksin, etazol, sulfadimezin, urosulfan, sulfale and others). First, for 7-14 days, these drugs are prescribed in high doses, and after a week's break, treatment is resumed for another two weeks. Also, furadonin is prescribed for a week to ease urination.

Of the diuretics, diacarb, lasix, temisal or decoctions of herbs are preferred: field horsetail, birch buds, juniper berries, rose hips, calendula flowers.
