Laryngitis in dogs is an inflammation of the larynx mucosa in a dog. This disease may be of primary or secondary nature.
The inflammation itself may be acute or chronic, croupous or catarrhal. Often the disease is complicated by tracheitis, developing into laryngotracheitis. Most often, dogs get sick during the cold season.
Causes of laryngitis in dogs
Primary laryngitis occurs as a result of hypothermia, including the supply of frozen foods. Sick dogs that are often drafted. The reason may be excessive irritation of the mucous membrane of the larynx from cold and even from hot water. Also, certain medications, gases, and dust can irritate the larynx.
Secondary laryngitis in dogs is a transition of inflammation from other organs to the laryngeal mucosa or the result of complications in a number of infectious diseases:
- mycoplasmosis in dogs,
- the plague of carnivores and others.
Symptoms of the disease
The first and main symptom of catarrhal laryngitis is cough. At first it is staccato, dry, sharp and very painful. Later, the dog's cough becomes wet, extended, but already painless, and can cause vomiting. Cough increased by inhalation of cold or dusty air, food intake.
When listening to noticeable:
- severe shortness of breath
- wheezing in the chest,
- labored breathing.
When you feel the larynx area, the dog reacts painfully. Croupous laryngitis is manifested by difficulty and rapid breathing, the depressed state of the animal. The dog's body temperature rises to 41 degrees, the muscles can tremble. Visible parts of the mucous membrane turn blue. Palpation of the larynx is felt, and its sensitivity rises sharply. During inhalation, various rales are heard.
Treatment of laryngitis in dogs
If you experience similar symptoms, you should contact your veterinarian. Also for fruitful treatment, first of all, it is necessary to exclude the causes of the disease and provide the dog with the right conditions: a clean and warm room.
- In the cold season it is better to exclude walks on the street or reduce them to a minimum.
- It is necessary to feed the animal only with slightly heated water.
- It is also necessary to adjust the diet.
The entire period of treatment a dog should not be given not only cold, but also solid and large food. It is better to feed the animal only with warm liquid porridges, soups and broths. Also in the diet should include mineral supplements, multivitamins and vitamins. Beneficial to the health of the animal affect broths and herbal infusions.
In case of complications, laryngitis is treated with sulfonamides and antibiotics for ten days. In parallel, anti-allergic drugs are often prescribed:
- cromolyn sodium,
- Intal and analgesics.
Calcium chloride 10% is used intravenously. It is also good to irrigate the larynx with vegetable oils for softening and astringent solutions. If possible, conduct UHF-therapy and UV irradiation.
