The dog has failed paws. What to do?

The owners, who suddenly became witnesses of how their dogs suddenly refused paws, are very lost, not knowing what to do and how to help the pet.

Just yesterday, they were happy about how their pet was playing catch-up quickly, and today it is lying, unable to rise.

Causes of paw failure in a dog

There may be many reasons why a dog may refuse paws. Often they become different injuries:

  1. fractures,
  2. ruptures of tendons and ligaments,
  3. stretching
  4. peripheral nerve damage.

The cause of the disease and become:

  • arthritis of the joints of the limbs
  • arthrosis,
  • tumors
  • herniated discs and discopathy.

It is also possible spinal pathology, which arises from the impact of adverse factors on the spinal cord. Frequent satellites of lesions of the spinal cord in the thoracic and lumbar spine are paresis and paralysis. Most often, the paws of dogs suffer from falls (especially in small breeds), autotrauma, strikes and strong bites during fights.

Even a bad jump, a sharp turn, or a slither of a dog on an ice crust can lead to a paw failure. At this point, the integrity of the spinal column structure is disturbed at the site of spinal injury, edema occurs, which squeezes the radicular nerves and spinal cord.

Nerve cells die and the dog cannot walk. The extremities may fail in degenerative diseases of the spine, spondylosis, that is, “local aging” of individual vertebral segments. Spondylosis in dogs is very slow, and is practically not detected at an early stage.

Tumors in a dog that gradually develop in the spinal cord or in its immediate vicinity lead to vertebral column fractures and pathological changes in it.

When the process is exacerbated, edema occurs and the spinal cord roots are compressed. The dog not only refuses its hind legs, but also curls its back, defecation and urination are disturbed.

The most severe form of damage is considered osteochondrosis. It occurs with rheumatoid lesions, genetically determined developmental defects, impaired blood microcirculation, spinal cord injuries. French bulldogs often have discopathy.

This is due to their anatomical structure, when during the selection the spine became elongated, and now it is under heavy loads. As a result, a disk may fall out, both during jumps and active movements, and at rest.

What to do if the dog has hind or hind legs

First of all, it is necessary to urgently turn to the veterinarian without losing a single minute, since for some diseases with this symptom, lost time can be costly, and timely intervention by a specialist can completely restore all motor functions and stop the pathological process.

The doctor will assess the condition of the dog, check for pain reactions, the preservation of reflexes and the sensitivity of the limbs. To make a correct diagnosis, you will probably need a number of procedures:

  • radiography
  • myelography,
  • delivery of laboratory tests.

According to the results of these studies, a form of treatment will be chosen. This may be conservative therapy or surgery, depending on the disease diagnosed.
