Causes of intestinal, renal and hepatic colic in dogs
Intestinal colic usually occurs in young dogs and puppies due to overfeeding or feeding with poor-quality feed. Not rarely, the disease occurs with a sharp change in diet after weaning the puppy from the mother. Also, intestinal colic may indicate such diseases:
- enzyme deficiency
- intestinal dysbacteriosis, ulceration of the intestine,
- swelling or foreign body ingestion.
The cause of colic also can be poor-quality food, as well as penetration of parasites into the liver. Renal colic is observed in acute pyelonephritis in a dog or urolithiasis, and can also occur after shaking, physical exertion.
Symptoms of dog colic
- In intestinal colic, the dog's abdomen volume increases.
- The abdominal wall is painful and tense, "rumbling" is heard in the stomach.
- The puppy refuses to eat and at the same time tries to lie down on the ground, whining.
- His breathing and pulse are speeded up, uneven.
If measures are not taken on time, a bowel movement can occur, which often results in the death of the dog. With kidney or liver colic, a dog develops vomiting with white or yellow foam. At the same time, he may have a normal appetite. The dog is in pain in the abdomen and lower back, cannot find a place for itself, constantly changes its position. With renal colic, it often urinates. Also marked bloating, constipation.
Treatment for dog colic
In intestinal colic, it is possible to alleviate the condition of the dog by doing a light massage of the abdomen, applying a warm heater to it. In addition, give activated carbon at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 kg of animal weight. Intramuscular injection of analgin from the calculation - up to 1 ml per 5-10 kg. Also poured diphenhydramine (1 ml) and no-silos (1 ml), it is possible in one syringe.
If the injection is impossible, dilute the tablets with water and inject this solution in the form of a warm enema with about 10 ml. If the condition of the dog does not improve, it is necessary to examine it carefully in the veterinary clinic: pass a stool test for coprology, blood for biochemistry to check the internal organs.
At this time, it is better not to feed the dog with cereals, but transfer to high-quality dry food. With kidney stones it is better to remove them. In anticipation of the operation, the dog must be given rest, to warm the kidney area. In the diet of the animal reduce the amount of meat (especially raw), transfer it to a dairy diet.
